Justin Kowalski of Mishawaka, Ind. captured his third straight Steve’s Run 5K championship on Saturday as he easily bested the field in the 37th annual event.

Kowalski ran a 15:53 to defeat South Bend, Ind.’s Joseph Zielinski by seven seconds. Zielinski was clocked at 16 minutes on the nose, while Jake Gillette of Goshen, Ind. was third with a 16:41.

Rounding out the top five were Steven Dennig of South Bend (16:47) and Dowagiac’s Chris Gantt (17:00).

Savina Malinverno, who will be a sophomore at Portage Northen this year, edged Madeline Goheen of Fort Wayne, Ind. for the women’s 5K title. Malinverno ran a time of 19:17 and Goheen a 19:20.

Niles’ Kimberly Law finished third with a 20:19 and Buchanan’s Torrie Eger fourth with a 21:06. South Bend’s Torie Sullivan was fifth with a 21:06.
