Barbara A. Bauernfeind, 79, of Broadway in Niles, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles

following an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 30, 1931 in Eau Claire, Mich. to Harry and Evelyn (McOmber) Humphrey. She moved from Benton Harbor to Niles in 1943 and later graduated from Niles High School in 1950. In 1991, she retired from Hadsell, Landgraf & Lynch Law Office in Niles.
Barbara was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Niles, where she volunteered at St. Mary School and for many projects and activities within the church. She was a member of the Perceptor Gamma Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for more than 50 years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and gardening.
On Nov. 7, 1953 in Niles, she married William Bauernfeind, who survives. She is also survived by their children, Michael (Norma) Bauernfeind of Mishawaka, Mary (Greg) Bierwagen and Martha (Dave) Vogl, both of Niles; grandsons, Mark Bauernfeind, Ensign Ryan (fiancee Oksana Kovolenko) Bauernfeind, U.S. Navy, Eric Bauernfeind and Noah Vogl; and granddogs, Halley, Kingston, Milo and Willie.
Mrs. Bauernfeind was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Humphrey.
A Memorial Mass for Barbara A. Bauernfeind will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Niles with the Rev. William T. Melody of Notre Dame, Ind.
Committal rites will be at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
Contributions in memory of Barbara may be made to St. Mary School.
