Lillian P. Allen, 90, of Louis Street in Niles, Mich., died at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at Brentwood Assisted Living Community in Niles of an extended illness.
Mrs. Allen was born on May 20, 1921 in Bangor, Mich., to Frank and Rosa (Mala) Pikal. She lived most of her life in this area, having spent 1967 through 1993 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was formerly employed at Southern Bell Telephone and Peabody Advertisement, both in Fort Lauderdale and Paul’s Toggery, Inc. in Niles.
Lillian was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles and Niles Peacemakers Club. She was active at the Niles Senior Center. She was an avid quilter and made more than 23 quilts in her lifetime.
On Jan. 1, 1942 in Bangor, she married Bernard C. “Bernie” Allen, who preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1996.
Mrs. Allen is survived by their children, Barbara Leaver of Niles, Don (Judy) Allen of Murphy, N.C. and Larry Allen of Niles; grandchildren, Andrea Bales and Stacy (Steve) Chapman, both of Atlanta, Ga. and Jeffrey Hoese of South Bend, Ind.; great-grandsons, Alec Bales and Christopher and Grant Chapman all of Atlanta, Ga.; and her sister, Frances Pikal of Bangor.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rose Groth.
Funeral services for Lillian P. Allen will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Edward H. Slate of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating.
Committal services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Mich.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
