HIGHLAND — Call it a match between teacher and student in the first round of match play at the 95th Michigan Women’s Amateur at Prestwick Village Golf Course.

Liz Nagel (DeWitt/Michigan State) won her match against MSU women’s head golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll (Haslett) 4 and 3. Nagel said putting was the difference in the match.

“We both struggled a little at the beginning but I started having some good short putts and she had a few mistakes,” said Nagel.

The Spartan junior has played against her coach before, most notably in the Women’s Michigan Amateur at Egypt Valley in 2007 when Slobodnik-Stoll was recruiting Nagel and also at the Women’s Michigan Open this year.

“I think it’s just great that she plays in everything,” said Nagel. “When you’re playing with Coach, you know you’re going to have a good time no matter what!”

Three matches went to extra holes: Emmie Pietila (Brighton) took 19 holes to get the win over Ella Pendy (Grosse Pointe Farms); Sarah Hoffman (Saline) topped Amy Ruthenberg (East Lansing) in 21 holes; and Kimberly Dinh (Midland) was victorious over Chloe Lawrie (Swartz Creek) in 20 holes.

“Ella made a lot of putts and I didn’t,” said Pietila. “I’d have a putt for birdie and she would make par and we would go to the next hole.”

Even on the 19th hole, Pietila didn’t sink her putt for birdie. But Pendy bogeyed and the match was Pietila’s.

“The putt was about 10 feet downhill and I just babied it down the hill and missed it and two putted,” said Pietila. “But I knew if I didn’t three-putt I would have the win so it worked out.”

Stroke play medalist Sarah Johnson (Wixom/Eastern Michigan University) dominated in her match versus Christina Cibrario (Milford) taking that match 5 and 4.

Stephanie Ross (Owosso) started off slow but took three holes in a row on the back nine and defeated Andrea Clark (Jackson) 1 up.

“I just stuck with the game plan today and had fun,” said Ross. “I didn’t play as well today as I did in the stroke play rounds but I hit my driver really well on the back nine and hit every fairway.”

There will be two rounds of match play tomorrow with the first round beginning at 8:30 a.m.
