Vickie L. Onderdonk, 52, of Old U.S. 31, Niles, Mich., died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at her home following a brief illness.

She was born on Feb. 9, 1959 in South Bend, Ind., to Howard C. and Pauline D. (Karnes) Onderdonk and has lived in Niles all of her life, graduating from Niles High School in 1977. She had been employed at Whirlpool Corporation in Benton Harbor, Mich., since 1997 and was previously employed at Pro-Tech in Buchanan, Mich.

Vickie enjoyed genealogy and had attended conventions to learn more about it. She also enjoyed working in her yard and garden and amateur photography, but her greatest interest was caring for others and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Brandon Gorbitz in 2005, and two brothers, Robert Onderdonk in 2006 and Jesse Onderdonk in 2008.

Surviving family includes Vickie’s companion, Lewis Daniel; her daughter, Kimberly (Michael) Gorbitz Cornelius of Buchanan; step-daughter, Rhianna Daniel of Oshtemo, Mich.; grandchildren Madison Cornelius, Morgan Cornelius, Max Cornelius, Brenden Pumfery and Bryee Pumfery; and Vickie’s brothers and sisters, Earnestine (Robert) Ellis of South Bend, Ind., Janice Duttenhaver, Paulette Cook and Harold (Torie) Onderdonk, all of Niles, Leroy (JoBeth) Onderdonk of Cape Coral, Fla., Martha Onderdonk of Thayer, Mo., Kathern (Mark) Bailey of Niles, Dean Onderdonk of Middlebury, Ind., JoAnne (Day) Armstrong of Niles, Monty Onderdonk and Linda Onderdonk, both of South Bend, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Vickie Onderdonk will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Pastor Dave Szymczak of the First Church of Christ officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
