Schu’s Golf Invitational brings in famous names

ST. JOSEPH — Schu’s Grill & Bar in downtown Saint Joseph, Michigan is excited to announce its 4th Annual Schu’s Golf Invitational.

This year’s outing is following a very successful event in 2010 and will take place Monday, Aug. 1  at the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, the Golf Club of Harbor Shores.

The proceeds from this year’s event will again benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS) and West Michigan Athletic Ventures. Last year, Schu’s Grill and Bar raised nearly $8000 for ACS and has a goal to raise $20,000 at this year’s golf event and charity auction.

This year’s tournament format is again a fun, Celebrity-AM format with a number of celebrities; many former NFL, NBA and MLB professional athletes committed for this year’s tournament.  The celebrities and former professional athletes are available for sponsorship and to play with those select teams.  The celebrity and former athletes scheduled to play include:

John Offerdahl played for the Miami Dolphins from 1986 to 1993. He was a five time Pro Bowler from his rookie year in 1986 to 1990.

Ben Davidson played for the Oakland Raiders from 1964 through 1969, and for the NFL Raiders from 1970 through 1972.

He also played for the league champion Green Bay Packers (1961), and Washington Redskins (1962-1963).

Otis Sistrunk was a former Oakland Raider from 1972 through 1978 and was a Pro Bowler in 1974 under John Madden.

Chuck Foreman played for the Minnesota Vikings as a running back and was a first round draft choice in 1973; Chuck was selected as the 12th overall pick in the draft. He was named All-Pro in 1975 and played in five consecutive Pro Bowls (1973–1977).

Tim Blackwell is a former catcher that played for the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs and the Montreal Expos in the years of 1974 to 1983.

Sam McDowell is a former pitcher and six-time All-Star, five of which were under his eleven seasons with the Cleveland Indians.

Matt Mantei, local sports celebrity, is a former pitcher with the Florida Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Boston Red Sox.

Vinnie Johnson is a two-time World Champion with the Detroit Pistons (1981-1991).  His number 15 Pistons jersey was retired at the end of 1991.

Barry Smith is a former wide receiver that played for the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1973-1976). Smith was the 21st pick in the 1st round of the 1973 NFL Draft.

Also, on the docket to attend is former ESPN broadcaster and motivational speaker, Wayne Soares, with more celebrities and former professional athletes yet to be confirmed.
