Steve Bender going into Coaches Hall of Fame

The Michigan High School Coaches Association is proud to announce that Steve Bender of Buchanan High School has been selected to the 2011 Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame.

Bender joins a class of 15 coaches who will be inducted on Sept. 18 on the campus of Central Michigan University.

Bender coached at Buchanan High School for 32 years:

• 25 years of basketball — varsity boys, JV boys, ninth grade boys and JV girls. He compiled a record of 287-218.

• Eight years of varsity track, going 60-22 with five conference and one regional championship.

• 12 years of football, as both a varsity and ninth grade assistant. He was an assistant varsity coach of Buchanan’s last undefeated team in 1988.

• 24 years of coaching varsity boys’ tennis, posting a record of 219-18-8 with a state championship in 2003, 17 conference championships and 14 regional titles.

Bender joins his late father, Don, who was inducted in to the Hall of Fame in 1986.

In February Steve was inducted into the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame and in 1993 was inducted into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame.
