Rock and roll star, bestselling author and Niles native Tommy James will make another visit home this fall.

About a year after returning to Niles for a book signing, James will be back in the area Sept. 9 — this time to play a show.

James and his band the Shondells will play South Bend’s Morris Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m.

Last August, James autographed copies of his book “Me, the Mob and the Music” and took photos with more than 200 people at Majerek’s Readers World in downtown Niles. He then received a key to the city during a homecoming celebration at his alma mater Niles High School.

James, 64, has amassed 23 gold singles, nine platinum albums and has sold 100 million records worldwide since launching his career with the chart-topping hit “Hanky Panky,” recorded in Niles in 1964.

HIs songs have been covered by more than 300 artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana, R.E.M., Prince, Billy Idol, Kelly Clarkson, Dolly Parton and the Boston Pops.

Niles figured heavily into James’ autobiography “Me, the Mob and the Music,” released last year.

“It’s where I started. You can’t tell the Tommy James story without mentioning the great impact Niles and South Bend had on my life,” James said.

James was born Thomas Jackson in Dayton, Ohio and was raised in Niles where he also began his music career as the front man for Tommy and the Tornadoes.

But the majority of the book focuses on the story of his tumultuous relationship with Morris Levy, the head of Roulette Records, a ‘front’ for the Genovese crime family in New York. The book has earned high praise from critics and industry insiders and is headed for Broadway and a major motion picture.

The September concert will feature songs from James’ 40-plus-year career, including classics like “Crimson and Clover,” “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” “Hanky Panky,” and “Mony Mony.”

The proceeds from the sale of selected Gold Pass seats will benefit Niles High School. Fans purchasing the special tickets will get choice seats and take part in a meet and greet with James after the show.

Tickets for the show go on sale Friday and are available at morriscenter.ticketforce.com or by calling (800) 537-6415.
