The League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties held its annual meeting and dinner June 21 at Chikaming Country Club.

A highlight of the evening was the designation of Betty Oostenbrug of Lakeside as a “Life Member,” an honor given those who have been members for 50 years or more.

Betty, 88, spoke about the importance of the League to her and husband Bill, soon to be 90, underscored that by adding she wants LWV put on her tombstone.

The local League Betty joined was first the Niles League of Women Voters, then the League of Women Voters of Niles/Buchanan.

In 1984 it became the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties.

Three generations of the Naines family of St. Joseph, all members, were in attendance.

Patriarch Joe Naines was League president from 1997-2002 and is still on the Board of Directors.

His daughter, Monica Eberhardt, will join him on the board.

Granddaughter Nicole, a recent Michigan State University grad, is a frequent attendee at League events.

Speaker at the annual meeting was Berrien County Treasurer and League member Bret Witkowski.

Bret took on the emergency manager topic, with a closer look at three municipalities in the county who have had an EM (Three Oaks), have one currently (Benton Harbor) or came close (Stevensville).

A business meeting concluded the program.

Elizabeth Ennis and Diane DeWitt will continue as co-presidents.
