Monnie H. Powell, 86, of Vandalia, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 in Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation in South Bend. He was born Aug. 2, 1924 in Corydon, Ky. to Henry and Anna (Arnett) Powell.
He was a carpenter in the Chicago area before moving to Vandalia in the early 1970s and began farming. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Niles and the William E. Lozier VFW Post #10704, Cassopolis.
Monnie is survived by his wife Eloise (Fowler) Powell, Vandalia; and two granddaughters, Michelle (Tony) Green of Granger, Ind. and Lisa (Ralph) Stephens of South Bend; one great-granddaughter, Taletha Andrews, Granger; niece Dolores Yancey and family, Austin, Texas; first cousins, Sylvia Williamson and Cortez Oliver, both of Evansville, Ind., Billie Ann Forbes, Rose Mays, Robert Lee Chambers and Donnie Hawkins, all of Indianapolis, Ind., as well as great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Vivian Lofton, and three brothers, Conklin Powell, George Powell and Emerson Powell.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 5 p.m. for military honors under the auspices of William E. Lozier VFW Post #10704, Cassopolis and American Legion Efton James Post #206, Cassopolis, at Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 North Broadway Street, Cassopolis.
