Allan T. McDonald, 63, of Niles, died at 8:45 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born on July 2, 1947 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., to Teddy Thomas and Annie May (Bartlett) McDonald.

He graduated from Royal Oak Kimball High School and attended Ferris State University and Wayne State University. In his youth, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle and enjoyed serving as a lifeguard.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam era, serving in the U.S. Army. He has lived in Niles since 1980.

Allan was an information technology specialist and was employed at Clark Equipment and the South Bend Community School Corporation before his 25-year career at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Niles, where he served on the Vestry and the Usher Committee. He enjoyed fishing, completing crossword puzzles and tracking current events through several newspaper subscriptions.

On June 19, 1971 in Clawson, Mich., he married the former Kathleen E. Younk, with whom he was looking forward, within days, to celebrating the 40th anniversary of that wedding.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy McDonald and their children, Jonathan (Kecia) McDonald of Ypsilanti and Jill McDonald of Niles; sisters Marilyn (Terry) Poll of Phoenix, Ariz. and Janice (The Rev. Larry) Laskie of Arnold’s Park, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

The memorial service for Allan McDonald will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Trinity Episcopal Church with The Reverend James Slack officiating assisted by the Rev. Larry Laskie and will conclude with a procession out to the churchyard for the veteran’s flag presentation and taps by an honor guard of the U.S. Army.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
