Michigan swept by Indiana stars

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Championship Thursday did not go well at all for Team Michigan at Sports Fest.

In fact, Michigan, which entered the day undefeated in competition at Bethel College, was swept in baseball, boys’ tennis, girls’ tennis, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, softball and baseball.

Baseball

A three-run fifth inning lifted Metro to a 5-3 win over Michigan in the baseball championship at Patterson Field Thursday night.

Michigan led 2-0 after one inning of play, but Metro cut the lead in half with a run in the second and took the lead with three runs in the third, highlighted by Penn’s Kyle Schneider’s three-run home run.

Michigan scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but would get no closer and Metro capped the scoring with a run in the seventh.

Schneider not only delivered the game-winning hit, he also earned the mound victory.

Metro was led offensively by Penn’s Sam Sweeden, who doubled and tripled.

Connor Render of Sturgis had a double for Michigan. Dowagiac’s Jason Turner worked the fifth and sixth innings, but did not figure into the decision.

Girls soccer

A pair of second half goals lifted Metro past Michigan 3-1 in girls’ soccer at Bethel College Thursday night.

The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after the first half, but Ally Scholtes got the game-winner in the 51st minute and Alli Connelly capped the scoring with a goal in the 73rd minute.

Abby Suckow scored a goal in the 10th minute to give Metro the early 1-0 lead. Sarah Hall recorded the match’s only assist on the play.

Ellery Karsten tied up the match for Michigan with a goal in the 39th minute.

Metro held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Emily LaManna had seven saves for Michigan.

Boys’ tennis

Michigan was no match for Metro in boys’ tennis, falling 5-0 Thursday afternoon.

Only one match was not decided in straight sets.

Anthony Lupresto defeated Buchanan’s Derek Blank 6-4, 4-7 and 13-11.

Boys’ soccer

Four second half goals lifted Metro past Michigan in the Sports Fest boys’ soccer championship match Thursday night, 5-1.

Tim Wilson had a pair of goals for Metro, which also got scores from Brandon Stoller, Troy McGovern and Juan Padilla.

Edwardsburg’s Andrew Boyles scored the only goal for Michigan, in the 37th minute of the first half to tie the score at 1-1.

Metro had 23 shots on goal compared to just 13 for Michigan. Dowagiac’s Jason Turner, who also pitched in the baseball championship game, was credited with one save of the team’s eight saves.

Buchanan’s Nash Hughes recorded the lone victory for Michigan in either boys or girls tennis as she defeated Grace Hamilton at No. 3 singles on Thursday afternoon, 1-6, 6-4 and 10-5.

Michigan didn’t put up much of a fight in volleyball Thursday at the Weikamp Center at Bethel College, falling to Indiana East 25-23, 25-20 and 25-16 in the championship match.

Edwardsburg’s Emily Kozinski had five kills for Michigan, which also got three kills from Niles’ Rachel Zeider. Zeider also had two blocks, while Kozinski finished with two digs and an ace.
