MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Jacki Bailey doubled off the left-center field fence to lift Indiana East to a 3-2 victory over Michigan in the championship game of Sports Fest softball at Bethel College Thursday night.

Michigan led 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh after scoring a single run in the bottom of the sixth to break the 1-1 deadlock.

Dowagiac’s Katie Lorenz led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Niles’ Charissa Spear. Lorenz was able to move all the way to third when Indiana East did not cover the bag on the play.

With two outs, Edwardsburg’s Victoria Hurst singled home the run.

Indiana East took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the fourth inning as Taylor Miller singled with one out, Natalie Newell singled with two outs and Katie Troyer singled home Miller.

Michigan responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning as Hurst walked with one out and came around to score when Sam Helsley of St. Joseph laid down the sacrifice bunt and Indiana East threw the ball past the first baseman allowing Hurst to come around to tie the game.

Sam Steele picked up the win in relief of starter Newell. The pair limited Michigan to just three hits.

Dowagiac’s Tara Sova took the loss in relief of Helsley. Indiana East finished with just five hits.

“Sports Fest was a great experience,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “It was fun to coach other girls from other teams and have them play for you instead of against you. Our girls played hard to win and just came up a little short.”
