Edwardsburg Intermediate Students received a revved up lesson in racing and, well, math before the school year came to a close with a special visit from racer David Guarino.

Guarino, an Eddie father to Shelby, Antony and Daniel Guarino, brought his knowledge and expertise of open-wheel modified racing to Edwardsburg Intermediate School Thursday, June 2.

Shelby and her classmates in Nancy Tighe’s fifth grade class, along with students from four other fifth grade classes, had the privilege of getting a look at an orange and blue race car up close.

Students were taught many math concepts utilized in building and making a race car perform at its peak.

Geometry, algebra, fractions and calculating the costs associated with building and racing in the USA Modified Series, were all areas of math that Guarino explained.

Using a whiteboard, he drew diagrams and explained calculations that are used on a day-to-day basis in the world of racing automobiles. As he finished, many questions were answered that further helped the students understand the use of mathematics in the everyday world.

Guarino races his modified car at local tracks including M-40 and Kalamazoo.
