Eddies fall in district finals

COLDWATER — The Edwardsburg varsity baseball team scored 24 runs in two games on Saturday, but still came up short in the Division 2 championship game at Coldwater High School.

The Eddies played Three Rivers in the first game of the day taking an early 1-0 lead when Ian Lower knocked Dan Witucki in on a single in the first inning.

Three Rivers came back to score two runs in the second, but the Eddies still managed to stay on top when Calib Dill got on base with a double followed by two walks to load the bases. Evan Zimmerman’s ground out allowed Dill to score and then another run scored on a dropped third strike to give the Eddies a 3-2 edge.

Edwardsburg stretched its lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning when Witucki doubled and Ethan Zimmerman hit a 2-run home run. The Eddies increased their lead to 10-5 in the fifth inning on singles by Dill, Witucki and Ethan Zimmerman after three walks by Three Rivers.

The bats for Three Rivers got hot in the sixth inning and took took the lead 11-10.

Ethan Zimmerman sealed the win for the Eddies in the seventh inning by hitting a grand slam, scoring four runs and giving the Eddies a 14-11 lead.

Three Rivers was able to score another run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Eddies held on for the win.

Ethan Moreno started on the mound for the Eddies with Zack Thompson coming in for relief. Ethan Zimmerman went 3-for-5 with a single, two home runs and eight RBIs. Dill had a double and two singles for the Eddies.

In the championship game, the Eddies defense committed four errors in one inning that led to their demise as they lost to Sturgis 13-10.

Edwardsburg kept things close until the third inning when it committed four errors allowing three runs to score.

The Eddies did manage to score a run in the third as well making it 3-1.

Sturgis’ bats caught fire in the fifth inning when it took a 13-1 lead, but the Eddies did manage to come back in the same inning when Dill’s double scored Ethan Zimmerman and Thompson.

The Eddies managed to close the gap in the fifth inning with singles by Witucki, Kyle Slack, Ian Lower and Dill, leaving the score leaving the score at 13-7.

The Eddies added another run in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh, but came up short.

Evan Zimmerman was the starting pitcher for the Eddies with relief from Thompson and Jordan Bosse. Dill had a double and two singles at the plate for the Eddies.
