RICHLAND – A 3-run home run by Mitchell Dehn with two outs in the bottom of the sixth tied up the Division 2 Regional baseball semifinal at 3-3.
Sturgis scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead on Niles at Gull Lake High School.
With one out, Chance Stewart singled to start the rally. Eliezer Melendez followed with a single to put runners at first and second for Riley Wentzel, who singled to right field. Niles outfielder Riley Robson slipped as he attemped to cut the ball off and it rolled to the fence allowing both runners to score.
The inning could have been worse for the Vikings, but on a ground ball to shortstop Matthew McLaughlin, Wentzel was caught in a run-down, but got back to third. On the same play, Jarred Finnerman was cut down trying to get to second after reaching on a fielder’s choice.
In the top half of the sixth, Niles got a two-out single from Taylor Campbell and a walk to Chris Mangus to set the table for Mitchell Dehn, who hit a 3-run home run to dead center field to tie the score at 3-3.
Niles could not do any more damage in the inning, but got themselves back into the game and gave themselves new life.
