INDIANAPOLIS — With only 12 laps left in the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, Danica Patrick found herself out in front with a chance to become the first woman to ever win the event.

But once again, like it did her rookie season in 2005, fate stepped in and kept Patrick from winning the race.

And both times, Dan Wheldon drank the milk Patrick could almost taste.

“Every time I come here and see someone else win, I hate it more,” Patrick said. “The more times I come here, the more I love it, the more I want it.”

Patrick did not question her team’s decision to stay out, saying “That’s what you have to do here at Indy — you have to take that chance.”

Patrick’s late stop for fuel put her in 10th place when the checkered flag flew.
