INDIANAPOLIS – On the pace laps, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt drove the pace car, while three-time winner Johnny Rutherford drove the pace care during the caution laps.
Mari Hulman George, IMS chairman, was the passenger in the pace car on the parade laps.
As the field took the restart on lap 70, Dario Franchitti was the race leader with Scott Dixon second and Dan Wheldon third. All three are former 500 winners.
After all the talk about double wide restarts, the drivers didn’t seem to mind mixing it up on lap 70 when they were four-wide at one point down the front straightaway and were three-wide heading through turn two.
At lap 70, the race average was up to 159.497.
Danica Patrick moved up to 14th place as the field eclipsed the 75 lap mark. She trailed the leader by 9.8-plus seconds.
Officially out of the race at lap 75 were Simona De Silvestro, E.J. Viso and Takuma Sato.
The first 24 cars were all on the lead lap. The first car one lap down was Ana Beatriz.
