5 candidates for 2 Bertrand board posts

There will be five candidates looking to fill two vacant posts on the Bertrand Township Board in August’s special election. The filing deadline was Friday.
Supervisor John Mefford and Trustee Dick Haigh were recalled by voters earlier this month. The board has been operating with three members, the minimum to be considered a quorum.
Clerk Jane Lano said the supervisor candidates are Republican Matt Remmo and independents Scott Bonner and Earl Lintz. The candidates for trustee are Republican Alice Kring and independent Anna Norton.
Remmo, who serves as a captain on the Bertrand Township Fire Department, ran against Mefford for supervisor in 2008.
Kring served as a trustee for several years, ending when she resigned in 2003.
Currently the board is made up of Lano, Treasurer Lee Ann Couture and Trustee David Zelmer, who was also on the recall ballot but escaped being ousted.
Lano, who had been targeted for recall by township resident Phil Hibschman, appears to be safe for now after Hibschman notified the Berrien County clerk that he has suspended his recall effort.
The special election for the two open board positions will take place Aug. 2.
