Visiting Cassopolis scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to upset Niles Saturday morning.

The Rangers edged the Vikings 7-5 in the first game, but fell to Niles 2-1 in the second contest.

Tyler First drew a lead-off walk in the top of the eighth inning to get the rally started for Cassopolis. An error by Niles allowed First to advance all the way to third where he would score on a fielder’s choice play.

The Rangers were able to push across an insurance run on a sacrifice fly.

Niles went quietly in the bottom of the eighth despite drawing a one-out walk.

The Vikings (12-11) grabbed a 3-1 first inning lead on a three-run home run by Zach Holt.

Cassopolis, which scored a run in the top of the first, reclaimed the lead with four runs in the third inning.

Ryne Nickel doubled home two of those runs, while Dwayne Morgan and Rick Hayden singled home a runs.

Niles would cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the fifth and knotted the game at 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Matthew McLaughlin led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Taylor Campbell. McLaughlin then stole third and scored on a sacrifice by Holt.

Brandon Davis went the distance for the Rangers, allowing four earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Taylor Purucker took the loss in relief of Niles starter Chris Mangus, who worked the first seven innings.

In the second game, Niles scored single runs in the first and fourth innings, while Cassopolis scored its lone run in the sixth.

Cody Taggart went the distance on the mound for the Vikings, tossing a four-hitter with four strikeouts.

Niles scored the winning run in the fourth when Alex Grishaber and Donte Stevens hit back-to-back doubles.

They were the only two hits the Vikings would get against Nate Blad, who struck out 12.
