THREE RIVERS — The Dowagiac golf team put the finishing touches on a tremendous Wolverine Conference season by winning the league tournament on Thursday and securing the undisputed league championship.

After completing last Friday’s league jamboree hosted by Three Rivers, the golfers took a break for a bite to eat and headed back out on the Sauganash Country Club course to compete in the 18-hole conference tournament.

The Chieftains were no match for the other nine teams, winning the tournament by 11 strokes over runner-up Gull Lake. Dowagiac shot 301 compared to 312 by the Blue Devils.

Dowagiac won the final regular season jamboree by a stroke over both South Haven and Vicksburg, 157-158. Dowagiac’s score of 301 in the league tournament is a new conference record according to Chieftain coach Van Johnson.

“We played really well,” he said. “That score of 301 is a really good score and the rest of the coaches tell me that’s a new record.”

Defending league champion Vicksburg placed third with a score of 329. Otsego (336) and Three Rivers (351) rounded out the top five.

Dowagiac senior Chris Craft earned medalist honors for both the league tournament and overall as he shot a two-under par 70. It was the second time in three years that Craft earned that honor.

The Chieftains actually placed four of its five golfers in the top 10 on Thursday as Max Howe shot 75, while Jordan Juday and Kyle Ward both finished at 78. Cody Fairleigh finished with an 86.

Dowagiac so completely dominated the league this year it landed all five players on the all-conference squad and it won 119 of a possible 120 points.
