EDWARDSBURG — The Dowagiac soccer team split a pair of games on Saturday at Edwardsburg High School in the annual Eddies Invitational.

The Chieftains lost the first game 1-0 to host Edwardsburg, but rebounded to win easily over Bridgman 4-0 in the second game.

Despite losing the first contest to Edwardsburg, the Chieftains played pretty well overall they just couldn’t manage to find the back of the net.

“I think we possessed the ball really well. We moved it, just unlucky,” said Chieftain coach Mike Williams. “Our defense came off a mark and they got a goal from it. I wasn’t disappointed in our play at all because we played controlled soccer most of the game.”

The one defensive miscue came approximately 10 minutes into the contest when Edwardsburg’s Jennifer Sporleder took a pass from teammate Lizz Huff and found the back of the net.

Good defensive play and good goal tending by both teams kept the score the same for the remaining 50 minutes, and the game ended 1-0.

“We played well, we were just unlucky and we didn’t finish well when we had the chances,” Williams said.

In the second game, the Chieftains didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard as just 30 seconds into the game Bre Williams connected on a goal off a centering pass from Correshia Rodgers to take the early 1-0 lead over Bridgman.

Fifteen minutes later Rodgers got one past the Bridgman keeper to increase the lead to 2-0, while just minutes later Williams would connect on her second goal of the contest as the Chieftains had the commanding 3-0 advantages at the break.

In the second half, Lauren Krueger connected from inside the zone to increase the lead to 4-0 and capped the Chieftain scoring with 20 minutes to play in the contest.

On Monday night, the Chieftains were blanked by host Comstock in a Wolverine Conference match, 2-0.

The Colts scored a goal in each half to defeat the Chieftains.

Karina Del Moral scored with 24:17 remaining in the opening half to stake Comstock to the 1-0 lead.

Amanda Clapper scored with 11:52 to play in the second half to cap the scoring.

The Chieftains held a 22-18 advantage in shots on goal, but the Colts’ keeper Klsey Wiers was outstanding in the net, stopping all 22 shots she faced.

Alyssa Fritz had 16 saves for the Chieftains.
