Edwardsburg golfers continue domination

Monday afternoon’s Lakeland Conference Jamboree at Orchard Hills was no contest.

Defending champion Edwardsburg completely dominated the event, winning by a whooping 31 strokes over runner-up Bridgman.

The Eddies shot 164, while Bridgman shot 195. Cassopolis also shot 195, but the Bees earned the spot in the standings by the fifth man tiebreaker.

Coloma was fourth with a 213, host Buchanan fifth with a 215, Brandywine sixth with a 219 and Berrien Springs seventh with a 230.

The Eddies’ Pierce Bourgeois earned medalist honors after shooting 40.

Edwardsburg also got a pair of 41s from Chris Eaton and Dominic Razzano. Austin Tevlin shot 42, Max Habicht 45 and Brody Baucus 48.

Brent Brown led Buchanan with a 47, while Zack Rose shot 49 for the Bobcats.

Big 16 Conference Tournament

CENTREVILLE — The Niles golf team finished second in the first of two days of Big 16 Conference Golf Tournament play.

Battle Creek Lakeview won the opening 18 holes with a team score of 297. The Vikings were second with a 310, while Mattawan (315), Coldwater (317) and Sturgis (319) rounded out the top five.

Harper Creek’s Brandon Grube was medalist after shooting a one-under par 71.

Battle Creek Harper Creek finished sixth (322), Portage Central seventh (324), Marshall eighth (326), Kalamazoo Central ninth (327) and  St. Joseph 10th (333).

Lakeshore was 11th (344), Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 12th (368), Portage Northern 13th (372) and Benton Harbor 14th (448). Battle Creek Central does not have a golf team.

John Schrader shot 74 to lead the Vikings, who also got a 75 from Chris Noble. Jared Langmeyer finished with a 79 and Brett Phillips an 82. Dominic Wyland and Sam Clark both shot 89.

“I was very pleased,” Niles coach Greg Gunder said. “My frustration I told them was because I know they are not playing up to their potential. Today we were close. I think that message got through to them that ‘hey, we can do this.’ It was a good day.”
