Through four innings Tuesday afternoon, Lakeland Conference leaders Edwardsburg and Cassopolis were deadlocked at 0-0.

Over the final nine innings, the Eddies outscored the Rangers 16-2 to sweep a key league showdown.

Edwardsburg scored six runs over the final three inning of the opener to take a 6-0 victory over the Rangers. In the nightcap, Edwardsburg scored five runs early and five runs in the final inning to earn the sweep with a 10-2 victory.

After a scoreless first four frames, Edwardsburg (6-4, 5-0 Lakeland) got on the board with three runs in the fifth inning. A single, a sacrifice bunt and a walk got the inning started for the Eddies. Daniel Witucki’s bad-hop ground ball plated the first run of the frame and then Michael Kempton stroked a two-run single to give the Eddies the 3-0 advantage.

The three-run rally came immediately after Edwardsburg worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third. Eddies’ pitcher Kyle Slack picked up a strikeout and induced a ground ball to end the inning and swing the momentum into Edwardsburg’s favor.

The Eddies got a solo home run from Zach Thompson in the fifth inning and then plated two more in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Slack tossed a four-hitter with nine strikeouts in earning the opening game victory.

In the nightcap, Edwardsburg jumped on Cassopolis early, building a 10-0 lead before the Rangers finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The game was called due to darkness following the Rangers’ at-bat.

Ethan Zimmerman provided most of the punch to the Edwardsburg offense in the second game, collecting three hits with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. The Eddies finished with nine hits off of three Cassopolis pitchers.

Witucki also had a double for Edwardsburg in the nightcap.

Brandon Davis drove in both runs for the Rangers with a single.
