NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A three-run fourth inning lifted the Niles baseball team past Shaker Heights (Ohio) Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

Trailing 1-0, the Viking (9-4) scored three times in the top half of the third.

John Carey opened the inning by reaching first on an error by the Shaker Heights second baseman. Donte Stevens singled to put runners at first and third with no outs.

Logan Harpenau then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Carey with the tying run. Harpenau was safe on the play. Zach Holt hit into a fielder’s choice play in which Stevens was out at third.

Taylor Campbell lifted a sacrifice fly to advance Harpenau to third. Holt then stole second before Matthew McLaughlin singled home Harpenau with the go-ahead run and Holt to give the Vikings’ a 3-1 advantage.

The game remained that way until the seventh when Niles tacked on an insurance run.

McLaughlin reached base on an error and moved to second when Josh Brawley was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a ground out by Dallas Munger.

McLaughlin scored the game’s final run on a balk.

The Vikings finished with seven hits, led by McLaughlin, who was 2-for-4. Carey doubled for the Vikings.

Campbell picked up the victory as he worked six innings before giving way to Cody Taggart, who pitched the seventh.

“You definitely feel a lot better when you walk away from this one,” Niles coach Mike Vota said about his team bouncing back from being swept on Thursday. “We got a couple of key hits when we needed them finally. We have been struggling with runners in scoring position and not getting the key hit when we needed it. And today we got a couple.

“Taylor did a real nice job. That was his best outing of the year by far. He made some nice adjustments, which was good to see. He pitched with a lot of confidence.”

Allegan at Dowagiac

Dowagiac’s Jason Turner drove in a run in the top of the seventh in the second game of Friday night’s Wolverine Conference baseball game with visiting Allegan to give the Chieftains the sweep.

Turner also worked five strong innings of relief, but did not pick up the victory as Zac Hyatt took the mound in the bottom of the seventh after the Chieftains had taken the lead.

Turner struck out eight and walked just two over five innings in relief of Aaron Blaske, who worked the opening inning after earning the decision in Dowagiac’s 13-2, four-inning victory in the first game.

After scoring the run in the top have of the seventh, the Chieftains sent the Tigers down in order with the aid of a pair of nice defensive plays.

Dowagiac (7-8, 6-2 Wolverine) thought it had won the game the previous inning after taking a 3-2 lead with a run. But Allegan (2-8, 2-6 Wolverine) scored in the bottom of the sixth to square the game again, this time at 3-3.

The Chieftains and Tigers both scored a run in the first inning, while Allegan took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third. Dowagiac tied the score at 2-2 with a run in the fourth.

The Chieftains finished with six hits, including doubles by Hyatt and Chad Gravatt. Blaske was 3-for-4.

Blaske, Turner and Hyatt combined to toss a two-hitter. Both of Allegan’s hits came in the first inning.

In the opener, Dowagiac scored a combined 11 runs in the third and fourth innings to break up a 2-2 tie with the Tigers.

The big blow in the six-run fifth inning was Brett Scanlon’s two-run home run.

The Chieftains finished with 12 hits, including three each from Hyatt and Turner. Hyatt doubled and drove in four runs, while Turner picked up three RBIs.

Gravatt and Tony Brooks both had a pair of hits. Brooks also drove in two runs.

Blaske worked four innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs with four strikeouts, to pick up the victory. Ryne Willming pitched the fifth, striking out one.

Dowagiac will head to Comstock on Tuesday for another Wolverine Conference doubleheader.
