ST. JOSEPH — Two-time defending state champion Kaisha Martin of Dowagiac had a big night Friday at the annual Rotary Track Meet held at St. Joseph High School.

Martin won three events and was a member of the Chieftains’ 400-meter relay team that finished second.

Martin won the long jump with a leap of 17-3, won the 100-meters with a time of 12.7 and won the 200-meters with a time of 26.59. Martin was the state champion in the long jump and 100-meters at last year’s Division 3 state meet.

Regina Kennedy set a new school record in finishing second in the shot put with a toss of 36-9. Creona Rodgers was second in the high jump with a height of 5-feet, while Jacoya Brookins, Rodgers, Andrea Wade and Martin posted a time of 52.36 to finish second in the 400-meter relay.

Dowagiac did not pick up any victories with its boys’ team, but the Chieftains did collected three runner-up spots.

The 400-meter relay team of Michael Bennett, Dontrell Tucker, Lucas Petro and Austin Adams were second with a time of 44-88. Adams was second in the 100-meters with a time of 11.55, while Chris Gantt was second in the 1,600-meters with a clocking of 4:34.

Sam Courtney finished third in the shot put with a toss of 44-10. Gantt and Tucker were fifth in the 3,200 and 100 with times of 10:14.4 and 12.01 respectively.

“Top to bottom, we were extremely pleased with the performance on both sides. Boys and girls 400-meter relay teams both had excellent races,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “Regina Kennedy had a very special night that was very exciting for all of us. Kaisha was unchallenged in her individual events.”
