Shirley J. (Covington) Stephens, 72, of Niles, passed away at her home Tuesday, May 3, 2011 with her family by her side, following a brief illness.
Shirley was born on Jan. 25, 1939 to the late Columbus and Leona (Wall) Covington. She was one of 10 children growing up in the Covington household.
After graduating from high school Shirley went on to attend college for two years. She worked as a waitress at Frankie’s Restaurant for nearly 30 years. Her hobbies included sewing. She was known for her expertise in tailoring clothing, making drapes and sewing clothing items for many. Shirley enjoyed going to local garage sales, reading and cooking. She mostly enjoyed spending time with her family.
The family would like to thank Lakeland Hospice for the care they gave to Shirley.
She is preceded in death by her parents and all of her brothers and sisters.
Shirley is survived by her children, Robin Stephens-Whitmire of Niles, Larry “Rick” (Genia) Stephens of South Bend, Adam Stephens, Shannon Stephens of Niles; four grandchildren, Mandy Whitmire, Joshua Stephens, Aaron Whitmire and Christian Holmes; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held for Shirley Monday, May 9 at Mission Hills Committal Chapel at 11 a.m.
