A no-hit performance in the opening game Thursday night by Edwardsburg’s Andrea LaPlace didn’t leave many a Vella Park feeling good about Niles’ chances in the nightcap.

After all, Edwardsburg had just handed the Vikings a 9-0 setback in the opening contest.

But perhaps Niles (5-7) learned something about itself in the second game as it rallied to defeat the Eddies 8-7 in eight innings.

Edwardsburg (8-7) and LaPlace overwhelmed the Vikings in the first game. LaPlace struck out 11 and walked three.

At the plate, the Eddies were also effective, finishing with 10 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance from Teryn Williams. Edwardsburg also got a pair of doubles from Kara Spencer as well as two-baggers from Victoria Hurst and Emily Shoupe.

Molly VanDeKeere took the loss for the Vikings.

Niles raised its game in the nightcap, building a 6-2 lead through the first four innings before Edwardsburg came storming back to take a 6-5 lead with a run in the top half of the eighth.

Niles would score twice in the bottom half of the eight to pull out the victory.

The Eddies got a home run from Hurst and a run-scoring single from Spencer to send the game into extra innings.

Edwardsburg grabbed the lead in the top half of the seventh as with two outs, Williams singled home the go-ahead run.

In the bottom half of the frame, a pair of walks by LaPlace got the rally started for the Vikings.

VanDeKeere and Tala Gentry were issued the free pass before an infield single by Charissa Spear loaded the bases with no outs.

With one out, Hannah Porterfield singled up the middle to drive in the tying and winning run.

None of the pitchers to take the circle in the nightcap were dominant as the two teams not only combined for 15 runs, but they also banged out 21 hits between them.

VanDeKeere earned the victory for the Vikings, while LaPlace took the loss in relief of starter Jill Blough.

Niles finished the game with eight hits, including a double and a home run by Gentry. Spear added a triple.

Edwardsburg had 13 hits, of which, six were for extra bases. Hurst had a pair of home runs, while Shoupe doubled and tripled. Nicole Brooks and Brittany Hurst added doubles.
