Berrien County voters could see ‘revenue enhancement’ issue on 2012 ballot

ST. JOSEPH — Facing a possible $1.25 million cut in state revenue sharing next year, Berrien County may be going to the voters to help fill the void.
Berrien County Administrator Bill Wolf told county commissioners Thursday that he is considering pursuing a “revenue enhancement” next year. Wolf clarified it will not be a millage and didn’t specify an exact figure that the county will request.
Given the decrease in state funding, the potential elimination of the personal property tax and the need for some capital improvement projects in the next several years, Wolf said the revenue enhancement would be important.
Three county special millages will be up for renewal in 2012, plus the possibility of a county-wide road millage proposal. So Wolf is recommending moving the millage renewals to this August’s ballot and putting the revenue enhancement issue on the ballot in 2012.
“Three essential millages mixed in with a road millage and a revenue enhancement might confuse voters,” Wolf said.
John LaMore, 12th district commissioner, disagreed.
“Maybe I’m just not political enough, but I think the voters will understand,” he said. “I think it should be all in one. I don’t like jumping ahead (in renewing the millages).”
A resolution reflecting Wolf’s proposal will likely come before the commissioners at next week’s meeting.
