VICKSBURG — Visiting Dowagiac split a pair of Wolverine Conference softball games with Vicksburg Friday night.

The Chieftains (5-7, 1-3 Wolverine) dropped the opening game 6-1 to the Bulldogs, but bounced back to win the nightcap 14-4 in five innings.

“We are playing very inconsistent softball,” Dowagiac coach Mike Benke said. “Every doubleheader we have had this year, we have played one good game and one bad game. We need someone to step up in close games and want to be that hitter to dive in runs with runners on base. We haven’t had that in close, tight games.”

Katie Lorenz was 2-for-3 in the opening game. Miranda East (2-4) took the loss.

Audrey Jensen picked up the victory for the Bulldogs and also had a home run.

In the second game, Kiele Belew was 2-for-3, as was Amanda Craft, who drove in three runs. Devon Ownby was 2-for-4 with a double. Kristyn Turner finished with two hits and Tara Sova, who was the winning pitcher, doubled. Brittany Parritt had a triple for the Chieftains, who finished with 13 hits.

Sova improved to 3-3 with the victory.

Dowagiac will host Three Rivers Tuesday in a make-up Wolverine Conference contest.
