Arlene E. Morgan, 88, of South 13th Street, Niles, died at 6:53 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend unexpectedly.

She was born Sept. 23, 1922 in Waverly, Tenn. to Andrew Jackson Batton and Nora Bell (Knighton) Batton. She came to this area in 1943.

Arlene was formerly employed at Wonderland Discount in Niles. She was a member of Church of Christ on Huron Street in Niles, as well as the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 26 in Niles and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening. Arlene loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

She married Clifton Eugene Morgan on June 1, 1940 in Carrouthersville, Mo. He died Nov. 20, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Fred, Casey, Byphell, Willie, Lowell, James, Betty Ruth and Jessie Alice Batton; Marie Henson; and Lola Mae Pierson.

She is survived by a son, Bobby Gene (Pam) Morgan of Niles; daughters, Brenda Sue Glennie of Niles, Wilma Kay Morgan of Lincoln, Neb., Jo Ann Morgan of Paw Paw, Mich. and Nora Denise (David) Dennie of Granger, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lonnie Batton of Dyersburg, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will be gathering privately at the graveside with David Thompson of Church of Christ of Niles officiating.

She will be buried at Highland Cemetery in South Bend.

There will be no visitation.
