Niles sweeps past Coloma

The Niles baseball team got back to work on Thursday afternoon and came away with a sweep of visiting Coloma to remain undefeated on the season.

The Vikings (7-0) edged the Comets 3-2 in the opening game and then knocked off Coloma 8-2 in five innings.

Cody Taggart picked up the victory in the opener in relief of starter Chris Mangus, who worked the first two innings. Mitchell Dehn pitched the third and fourth frames for the Vikings before giving way to Taggart.

The trio combined on a four-hitter.

Niles finished with six hits, including 2-for-2 performances from both Matthew McLaughlin and Riley Robson.

In the nightcap, the Vikings scored seven runs in the second inning to break the contest open. Niles scored its final run in the third. Coloma scored both runs in the fifth inning. The game was stopped due to darkness.

The Vikings had just two hits in the contest, both singles by Taylor Campbell and Mangus, but took advantage of four hit batter and five walks.

Taylor Purucker earned the victory with relief help in the fourth and fifth from Campbell.
