EDWARDSBURG — Edwardsburg played host to Berrien Springs in girls’ tennis on a cold Monday afternoon.
The Shamrocks were fielding a girls varsity tennis program for the first time in 10 years. While most of the Shamrocks were new to the game due to the hiatus of the school’s tennis program, some of the girls had been playing as part of the boys’ team over the last couple of years.
The Eddies didn’t feel sorry for the Shamrocks (2-1) as they rolled to a 7-1 victory and stayed perfect on the season, improving to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Lakeland Conference.
“My hats off to Berrien Springs,” said Edwardsburg coach Kim Bartz. “This is their first season with a girls team, they have great coaches and they are going to be competitive. I know they will develop a really strong program.”
In singles play, the Eddies won three of the four flights as Hayley Jones defeated Yasmine Benjelloun 6-0, 6-3, Connie Kutschbach defeated Abby Hoge 6-1, 6-2 and Tory Treat defeated Mackenzie Holets 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2, 3, and 4 singles respectively.
Edwardsburg swept the doubles flights with Jamie Richardson and Alyssa Nasco winning No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-0 over Ashley Kruck and Genny Westendorp.
The Eddies No. 2 doubles team of Kinzie Hahn and Sydney Brancaleon didn’t drop a set as they beat Stefani Camacho and Maggie O’Brien 6-0, 6-0. The No. 3 doubles team of Jessica Brown and Sakura Rowell won 6-2, 6-2 over Kayla Foster and Roberta Zelmer, while the No. 4 doubles of Madison Hatkevich and Andrea Wagoner won 6-1, 6-2 over Chelsea Schmidt and Cari Glanville.
The lone victory for Berrien Springs came in No. 1 singles where freshman Arien Kissinger defeated Edwardsburgs’ Alex Watts 6-0, 6-4.
“We have a young team, we graduated a lot of seniors last year,” said Bartz. “The girls have worked hard over the summer and they’re competitive, athletic, and they’ll fight to the end.”
