The Ring Lardner track team held its first big meet of the year by hosting the Niles/Edwardsburg Relays.

Six teams competed in 10 different events. The boys’ team took first place with a score of 78 points. Its closest opponent was Lakeshore, who was 10 points behind.

The boys took first place in only two events the hurdles and 3,200 meter run. Joe Avance, Adam Langmeyer, Chase Rocky and Quintin Smith won the hurdles, while Langmeyer, David Kennedy, Sean Craig and Sammy Rodts took the 3,200.

The boys took second in five other events, which gave them the win.

Josh Buckingham, Elijah Thompson and Kobie Dos Santos grabbed two seconds and a third place finish. Ethan Stanfill, Jalen Alexander and Craig took a second in the high jump, with Alex Bata, Kennedy and Braulio Sosa finished third in the shot.

The Lady Vikings had a tougher night finishing in fourth place behind three schools all tied for first: Lakeshore, Edwardsburg and Berrien Springs.

The girls at one time led the meet, but a costly drop of a baton and a couple of really great efforts by Lakeshore and Edwardsburg runners pushed the girls down in the standings. The girls scored 50 points while the other schools were tied with 62 each.

Maya Brookins, Deja Jones, Antonia Palmer, Keilah Dos Santos and Kylee Myer led the team Wednesday night.

Jasmine Brann, DosSantos, Jay Palmer and Allison Grant took the only first place win for the girls in the 1,600-meter relay.
