BERRIEN SPRINGS — Visiting Brandywine dropped a pair of 7-1 decisions to Berrien Springs on Tuesday in its Lakeland Conference opener.
In the opening game, the Bobcats (3-4, 0-2 Lakeland) managed just three hits against the Shamrocks’ Jon Shembarger.
Evan Hartman took the loss for Brandywine.
In the nightcap, Kyle Rago earned the win for Berrien Springs as he scattered five hits. Alex Erwin suffered the loss for the Bobcats.
Hartman had a double in the second game, while Brian Exner had four hits on the game. Hartman also drove in both runs.
“I really feel we need to compete on a consistent basis,” Brandywine coach David Sidenbender said. “We played well in spurts of an inning or two or a series of outs, but then we lose focus and the situations snowball into ‘crooked’ number innings, which can’t happen. I feel that we have pitched well enough at times to give ourselves a chance to win more games, but one mistake turns into three, which is typical for an inexperienced team.
“Again, with nine new comers on a 14-man roster, it could take some time to get to a place where we are consistent enough to compete every out. Berrien just limited its mistakes and didn’t give us much to take advantage of, they just out played us.”
