A trio of teams took on Orchard Hills on a soggy course and a windy Monday afternoon.

The Vikings and the Chieftains were returning from spring break after opening the season last month. For Brandywine, it was a chance to get out on the course for the first time in 2011.

Niles and Dowagiac had the better go of it Monday afternoon as the two teams were deadlocked at 168 after nine holes. The Vikings took home the victory based on the fifth-man score tiebreaker. Niles held a 46-58 advantage in that department.

The Bobcats came home third with a score of 201.

“Last time out Sam Clark shot a 40. Ttoday he finished with a 49,” Niles coach Greg Gunder said. “Luckily, we had Dominic (Wyland), who last week shot a very high number, shoot 42 today. We talked about that. I tell the guys we have the potential that when a couple are down, a couple step up. They (Dowagiac) had three 39s, but our depth kind of helped us out.”

John Schrader tied Dowagiac’s Chris Craft, Max Howe and Jordan Juday for medalist honors as all four finished at 39.

“Really pleased for the other three kids,” Dowagiac coach Van Johnson said. “They played solid. This was a little tighter course. Brad has re-injured himself from soccer. He only played six holes. I have never had that happen before.”

The Vikings also got a 41 from Chris Noble, a 42 from Wyland and a pair of 46s from Brett Phillips and Jared Langmeyer.

Dowagiac had Cody Fairleigh with a 51 and Anthony Nelson with a 58. Brad Hornburg did not finish due to a toe injury.

Zach Rose shot 43 for Brandywine, while Adam Earles finished with a 51. Dylan Frost shot 52 and Colton Ditto 55. Trent Moskwinski and Josh Boger shot 68 and 72 respectively.

Dowagiac captured the JV match as it edged Niles 209-215.

Ryan Clutter and Josh Myers both shot 53 to lead the Vikings, who also got a 54 from Josh Bell, a 55 from Andrew Myers, a 60 from Zach Brawley and a 65 from Kevin Schrader.

The Vikings will return to the links on Wednesday as they head to Mattawan for their Big 16 Confernce West Division opening jamboree.
