Terrence Leonard, 55
Feb. 19, 1956 — April 3, 2011

Terrence E. “Terry” Leonard, 55, of North Eighth Street, Niles, died at 5:35 a.m. Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph unexpectedly but of natural causes.
He was born Feb. 19, 1956 in Niles to Robert Dean and Maureen Louise (O’Toole) Leonard. He graduated from Niles High School and lived in Niles all his life. He was employed in pest control his entire career, for many years at T.A. Roberts Pest Control and most recently at Rose Exterminator Co., both in Niles.
Terry was a member and former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus 708, Niles and a member of the B.P.O. of Niles Elks 1322. He enjoyed camping with his family, especially at Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
His family remembers him as a friendly, kind and caring man; “to know him was to like him.” He rarely found fault in others and so very many people smiled when he was around. He enjoyed life — his wife, kids, family and people in general — and his family is proud to have honored that through the Gift of Life donation program. They are also grateful to all who cared for Terry and his family in his final illness, especially the staff in the critical care unit at Lakeland.
On Nov. 1, 1980 in South Bend, he married the former Cheryl Mattox with whom he celebrated the 30th anniversary of that wedding last year.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Leonard; and by their children, Carrie (Justin) Dunnem of Granger, Ind. and Sam (Tara Kaiser) Leonard of Niles; his parents, Bob and Maureen Leonard of Niles; Terry’s brothers and sisters, Beth (Don) Inks of South Bend, Ann (Curt) Butts of Sunset Beach, N.C., Sheila (Doug) Morton of New Haven, Ind., Becky (Dick) Scameheorn, Shane (Laura) Leonard, C.J. (Colleen) Leonard and Sue (Brian) Burks, all of Niles, and Tricia (Dan) Mentock of South Bend; many nieces and nephews, and Cheryl’s mother, Jan Mattox of South Bend; and brother, Dwight (Denise) Mattox of South Bend.
Services for Terry Leonard will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2011 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Joseph Richards of the Diocese of Crookston, Minn. officiating.
Committal rites will be read privately at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Ind.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with recitation of The Rosary at 8 p.m.
Contributions in memory of Terry may be made to the hospice of the donor’s choice.
“God had other plans for dear Terry. We will miss him, but are extremely honored that god shared him with us for the past 55 years.”
