JACKSON — After starting the season 10-3, the Ancilla College softball team have lost their last seven, including its first six games in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference.

Its latest downfall came at the hands of Jackson Community College (4-12, 4-2 MCCAA), losing 7-6 and 10-9.

In six MCCAA West losses, Ancilla (10-10, 0-6 MCCAA) have lost four of them by one run each.

Ancilla jumped out early in game one. In the top of the second, Courtney Cain’s two out single started a mini-rally for the Chargers. Alysha Faler moved Cain to second with a single to right, followed up by an RBI single by Cassidy Hardesty.

The Lady Chargers added two more in the top of the third. Trina Bauer led off the inning with an infield single, followed by a push bunt single by Kaitlyn Dreibelbis. After an out in the inning, Gretchen Gieseking grounded to the Jackson second baseman, who attempted a force out at third but instead struck Dreibelbis in the helmet leaving the bases loaded.

What looked like a positive for the Chargers at first ended up being a huge blow. The solid force of the throw hitting Dreibelbis in the helmet led to a concussion by the Ancilla first baseman, forcing her to leave the game. After caring for Dreibelbis, Ancilla continued the inning with the bases loaded. Pitcher Emily Steele’s single to left center scored Bauer and pinch runner Trisha Dillon to give Ancilla a 3-0 lead.

From there Jackson scored seven unanswered runs, with three in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the sixth to lead 7-3.

Ancilla made it interesting in the seventh, though. With one out Niles’ Demi Schrader legged out an infield single, followed by a Gieseking double. A Steele triple scored them both to cut the deficit to 7-5. One out later, Faler plated Steele to get Ancilla within one, the final margin of defeat.

The Ancilla bats came alive early in game two. Bauer led off the game with an infield single, Faler followed up by getting on base on an error. Bauer then scored on a Schrader single to center and Faler scored on a Gieseking single. After one out in the inning, Cain loaded the bases by reaching on an error. Hardesty scored Schrader and Gieseking one batter later with a single to right to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead.

Ancilla continued their prowess at the plate in the second with five more runs. Bauer led off the inning by reaching on an error, followed by a Faler single, and a Schrader RBI single. Gieseking plated Faler with a double to center, leaving runners on second and third. Schrader scored on the next at bat when Steele grounded out in the infield. Cain then doubled in Gieseking. After Hardesty reached on an error, Cain scored on a Dillon single to center.

Unfortunately for Ancilla it would be the last run they would score the entire game. Jackson went on to score four in the third, four in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh for a dramatic comeback win.

Faler finished the day 4-8 with an RBI, while Steele, Schrader, and Cain added three hits each. Steele ended up with 5 RBI; Schrader, 2 RBI; and Cain, 1 RBI. In 12 1/3 innings pitched Steele struck out eight and walked five, including two intentional walks. Preliminary reports on Dreibelbis indicate that she will miss the next two weeks of the season.

Ancilla is back in action on Thursday when it host Glen Oaks Community College (4-11, 0-6 MCCAA) at 3 p.m.
