INDIANAPOLIS – Tyra White scored with 3.4 seconds remaining in the first NCAA women’s national semifinal Sunday night at Conseco Fieldhouse to lift Texas A&M to the upset of Stanford 63-61.
The White basket culminated a wild finish as the two teams traded the lead back and fourth over the final minute of play.
Stanford, which lost to Connecticut in the title game in 2010 and was making its fourth straight trip to the Final Four, grabbed a 62-61 lead with 9.4 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Nnemkadi Ogwumike, who finished with a game-high 31 points.
The Aggies’ Sydney Colson took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor, dishing the ball off to White under the basket for the game-winner.
“It was hectic, you know,” Carter said. “Everybody was saying ya’ll 30 seconds for the rest of ya’lls lives. This is something that we’ve never done. It’s time to make history. Forgot that you’re tired and just push through it and I think that’s exactly what we did.”
Texas A&M (32-5) did not shoot the ball particularly well, were outrebounded by Stanford, but were able to hang around as the Cardinal tried to put the game away on several occasions, but could not shake the pesky Aggies.
Stanford led by as many as 10 points midway through the second half, but Texas A&M just would not go away and as a result, were able to force a frenetic pace over the final couple of minutes and turned a double-digit Standford advantage into a contest down the stretch.
The Cardinals (33-3), which saw its 27-game winning streak snapped, was its own worse enemy at times, turning the ball over 22 times compared to just 12 for A&M.
Despite a 39-29 advantage in the rebounding department, Texas A&M was able to score 21 points off turnovers and outscored the Cardinal 16-8 on second chance points as it held a 13-10 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Through the first 20 minutes of the opening NCAA women’s national semifinal, it was a battle of runs between Stanford and Texas A&M.
Each team took turns leading the opening half.
Texas A&M led by as many as seven points in the first half, while Stanford could only muster a four-point advantage, including its 27-23 halftime lead.
The Cardinal had the better of it in must statistical categories in the first half. Stanford shot 43.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and outrebounded the Aggies 23-15. However, the Cardinal turned the ball over 11 times compared to seven for Texas A&M which allowed the Aggies to stay close.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike was a one-person wrecking crew for the Cardinal as she scored 16 first half points and grabbed six rebounds.
Tyra White led the Aggies with seven points, while Sydney Carter and Danielle Adams, who spent some significant time on the bench in the first half, both had five points.
White led a balanced Aggie offense with 18 points, while Danielle Adams added 16 and Sydney Carter 14.
Ogwumike was pretty much did it all for Stanford as she also grabbed seven rebounds. Jeanette Pohlen added 11 before suffering an injury with just 3.3 seconds left in the contest and was not on the floor for the final play for the Cardinal.
Texas A&M will now take on the winner of the Notre-Dame-Connecticut game, the second semifinal contest. It will be the first trip to the title game for the Aggies.
