EAST LANSING — Senior first baseman Jeff Holm has been named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week and right-hander David Garner earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Both players helped lead Michigan State to a perfect 4-0 record last week with wins over Miami-Ohio, Yale, Akron and Pittsburgh.
Holm hit .500 (8-for-16) for the week with eight RBIs and four runs scored. He went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the victory over Akron, then followed that effort by going 3-for-4, including a double, with three RBIs against Pittsburgh.
For the season, Holm is tied for second on the team and fifth in the conference with a .423 batting average, and he leads the Spartans and ranks third in the Big Ten with 16 RBIs.
This marks the first time in Holm’s career he has been named Big Ten Player of the Week.
Garner struck out seven batters in 6.2 innings to get the victory on the mound against Pittsburgh. He allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits and walked just one against the Panthers.
Garner has only given up two earned runs in 16.1 innings this season, good for a 1.10 ERA, which ranks tied for second-best in the Big Ten. He also is ninth in the conference with 17 strikeouts and owns a 2-1 record with a save.
The Spartans (11-3) return to action for a three-game series at Evansville (March 18-20) this weekend.
