Niles’ Burandt gets opening day win

AUBURN HILLS — The first day of the MHSAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament did not go well for many of our area grapplers.

The Vikings’ Mike Gentry and Colin Burandt split their first round matches on Thursday at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Burandt defeated Travis Heller of Escanaba 4-2 at 125-pounds, while  Gentry lost by major decision, 11-2, to Quean Smith of Highland Park at 285-pounds in Division 2.

Brandywine’s three wrestlers were all defeated in the first round.

Brandywine freshman Paul Lochmondy, junior Jimmie Wright and sophomore Chanc Ravish all lost opening round matches.

Lochmondy was pinned Josh Wendling of New Lothrop in 2:26 at 103-pounds, while Wright was edged by Ty Defay of Addison 1-0 in his 119-pound match.

Brandywine’s Chanc Ravish lost his 130-pound match when Isaiah Schub of Traverse City St. Francis pinned him in 3:06.

All four Edwardsburg wrestlers were defeated in the first round in Division 2 as Michael Kempton, Blake King, Ryan Loupee and Stephen Coble all suffered first round losses.

Edwardsburg’s Kempton was pinned by Brand Schafer of St. Johns in 1:59 at 125-pounds, while The Eddies’ King was defeated by Zack Jones of Holly 13-6 at 130-pounds.

Loupee lost to Jamie Jakes of Dearborn Divine Child, 11-7 at 145-pounds and Coble was pinned by Cody Stewart of Holland at 189-pounds in 3:16.

In Division 3, Buchanan’s Gage Hutchison pinned Scot Wirostek of Chesaning in just 47 seconds at 171-pounds. Jeff Mucha was defeated by Derek Camilleri of Midland-Bullock Creek, 5-1.

Dustan Craig won his first round match as he pinned Garrett Hyatt of Lake Odessa-Lakewood in 1:07 at 285-pounds.

Cassopolis’ Dominic Forbes was pinned by Matt Smith of Hudson in his first round match at 189-pounds in just 43 seconds, also in Division 4.

Dowagiac’s Ben Luth was defeated by Jake Martin of Onsted in his opening round match at 130-pounds in Division 3, 14-6.
