Brandywine off to great start at state finals

AUBURN HILLS — Brandywine is off to a great start at the MSHAA Individual State Wrestling Finals as both freshmen Paul Lochmondy and junior Jimmie Wright both opened the day with wins.

Niles senior Mike Gentry also picked up a first round win at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Thursday.

Brandywine freshmen Paul Lochmondy also was a first round winner as he stuck Josh Wendling of New Lothrop in 2:26 at 103-pounds. Wright edged Ty Defay of Addison 1-0 in his 119-pound match.

Cassopolis’ Dominic Forbes pinned Matt Smith of Hudson in his first round match at 189-pounds in just 43 seconds, also in Division 4.

Gentry won by major decision, 11-2, over Quean Smith of Highland Park at 285-pounds in Division 2.

In Division 3, Buchanan’s Jeff Mucha was also a first round winner as he defeated Derek Camilleri of Midland-Bullock Creek, 5-1. The Bucks’ Gage Hutchison was pinned in just 47 seconds by Scott Wirostek of Shesaning at 171-pounds.

A pair of Eddies were not as fortunate in Division 2 as Ryan Loupee and Stephen Coble both suffered first round losses.

Edwardsburg’s Ryan Loupee was defeated by Jamie Jakes of Dearborn Divine Child, 11-7 at 145-pounds, while Coble was pinned by Cody Stewart of Holland at 189-pounds in 3:16.
