Cassopolis wrestlers go 3-2 at Bobcat Super 6 Duals

NILES — Brandywine captured the trophy in the Super 6 Duals wrestling tournament that it hosted Saturday by going unbeaten with wins over Gobles (63-18), Quincy (41-36), Galesburg-Augusta (84-0), Vermontville Maple Valley (45-24) and a 56-24 triumph over Lakeland Conference rival Cassopolis.

“We really kicked it in strong against Cass in the final match, but overall we were kind of sluggish,” noted Brandywine coach Rex Pomranka. “This was a tough week for us with matches as well as exams.”

Going unscathed for the Bobcats on the day were the smallest and the two biggest grapplers as Paul Lochmondy (103), A.J. Shell (215) and heavyweight Bryan Lee each went 5-0 for the meet.

“The conference meet is next week and we would like to finish third, where we are tied with Cass right now through the regular season,” stated Pomranka. “Our year is coming to an end and we’re still working getting us where we need to be.”

Cassopolis (35-9) learned of the opening a couple weeks ago and gladly accepted as it tried to reverse the 42-39 defeat to the Bobcats earlier in the season. But the Rangers were short a few wrestlers as the reversal of fortune was to no avail.

“We were missing our 112 and 215 guys today which really hurt and some good coaching on Brandywine’s part were too much to overcome,” explained Cassopolis coach Ken McCoy. “We were missing three people today and don’t have any replacements, so that hurt, but the team is doing very well as we have all the weight classes filled when healthy.”

The Rangers have three seniors in the middle of the lineup with Josh McCoy (130), Breatho Danzy (145) and J.D. Butrick providing the leadership as the coach predicts eight of his wrestlers will advance to regionals this year.

“We have eight real strong wrestlers we can count on which is good for our size school and only one last year went to regional, so I guess we are eight times better this year,” concluded McCoy.

Maintaining perfect records for the day with five victories for Cassopolis were Dominic Forbes (189), Jaylin Lawson (160), Danzy and McCoy, with the only other team defeat being a close 37-34 match with Quincy.

The Rangers were victors over Gobles (49-24), Galesburg-Augusta (69-0) and Maple Valley by a 50-34 score.

At the White Pigeon Duals on Jan. 26, Cassopolis defeated Berrien Springs 53-30 and defeated Centreville 66-10.

Going undefeated on the night were Shauntrell Gilliam (112), Lucky Thammavongsa (119), Joshua McCoy (130), Tyler Butrick (135), David Sopaseuth (140), Bretho Danzy (145), Jaylin Lawson (160) and Dominic Forbes (189).
