The Comstock Colts paid a visit to Dowagiac on Tuesday night, but it was the Chieftain horses that stole the show, cruising to an easy 72-55 Wolverine Conference win.

Dowagiac jumped on the Colts early and often as six of its players put points on the board in the first quarter. The Chieftains stormed out of the gate with a 3-point bomb by Tremail Butcher.

The Chieftains were too much for Comstock to harness as the home team pressured the visitors into forced shots and plenty of turnovers that would lead to points in transition. But it was the pure speed, height and athleticism of the Chieftains for which they didn’t have an answer.

A basket by Mike Hicks cut the lead to 3-2, but sophomore Dontel Highsmith scored to put Dowagiac back up 5-2. Eddie Hodges of Comstock drained a 3-pointer to tie the score at five and that is when the Chieftains let their horses run wild on the Colts, pulling away to a huge 27-8 advantage after the first eight minutes.

The Chieftains knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter, had several steals for breakaway layups and had a couple of dunks and blocked shots from senior Darius Wilson.

It was Wilson’s alley-oop slam at the midway point of the quarter that sparked the 22-3 run that buried the Colts.

The second quarter saw Dowagiac rest several of its starters for an extended period of time, while some of the under classmen got to get some precious playing time.

The Colts outscored the Chieftains 10-8 in the second period, but a Chris Craft second three of the game, followed by a Wilson dunk right before the half gave Dowagiac the momentum it wanted heading to the break with a 35-18 advantage.

Comstock’s Shaquan Jones wasn’t about to roll over and play dead after the intermission as he scored 14 of his game-high 17 points in the third period. Unfortunately for him, he only had one teammate helping him out as Hodges scored two, giving the Colts 16 for the quarter.

The other problem for Jones was that his team couldn’t stop the Chieftains from scoring as Dowagiac outscored the Colts 24-16 in the period increasing its advantage by eight points to 59-34 heading to the final period.

In the third, Butcher had seven of his team-high 15 and Jason Turner knocked in two of his four 3-point baskets on the night. Another thunderous rebound dunk by Wilson with five seconds left would finish the scoring for the Dowagiac starters on the night as all of the starters would sit out the final period.

Over the final eight minutes, Comstock would outscore Dowagiac 21-13, but the hole was too deep as the Chieftains cruised to the easy victory.

“I see these kids play every day and I know their potential, and we haven’t peaked yet. We set our goal this year to win the District title and we still have some work to go,” Dowagiac coach Danum Hunt said. “Because we have four sophomores on our team, if we can get the opportunity to get them on the floor and get them some experience I like to do that, because down the line during post season play, those minutes are going to be important.”

Dowagiac improves to 6-3 on the season and will host Allegan on Friday night.
