State Rep. Sharon Tyler, R-Niles, was chosen Thursday to lead the newly created House Subcommittee on Economic Development and Trade.

The subcommittee will concentrate on economic development and trade issues including jobs, business development and exporting goods.

“I am honored to be chosen for this position and look forward to working with businesses, local economic development groups, the MEDC and the governor’s staff to help existing businesses grow and attract new job creators to our state,” Tyler said. “Economic development is my passion. With extensive experience in this field, I plan to work closely with a restructured MEDC to look at what are the best practices for Michigan.”

The subcommittee is a part of the House Committee on Commerce, of which Tyler serves as vice chair.

“We need to support our existing businesses and help them take advantage of opportunities for growth, including exporting more of their goods,” Tyler said. “With such diverse leading industries in our state including manufacturing, agriculture and tourism, we have a great opportunity before us to retain and bring jobs to Michigan.”

House Speaker Jase Bolger of Marshall and Commerce Committee chair Wayne Schmidt, R-Traverse City, appointed Tyler. Other subcommittee members include Rep. Ben Glardon, R-Owosso, Rep. Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, Rep. Jon Switalski, D-Warren and Rep. John Olumba, D-Detroit.
