Road commission: business or public service?

Dear editor:

With the St. Joseph County Road Commission being operated as a private, independent business rather than a public service, if this was not true, maybe our elected public representatives would have made time to discuss a couple of issues.

From what public records I have been able to acquire from the St. Joseph County Courthouse, I happened to notice our new road manager, Louis Csokasy is being paid $62.02 per our, with $34.62 being wage per hour; $30.80 being fringe benefits; and $2.60 for overhead.

I would like to have heard from my elected representatives — with the economy being in such hard times, and a lot of people only earning $9 to $10 per hour, with weekend overtime pay for snow removal being cut — why they paying this individual so much money. It’s too bad a county public board meeting is not the place to discuss county business situations.

Sincerely,

Tim A. Carls
