Both Three Rivers and Vicksburg won a couple decisive wrestling matches Wednesday over host Dowagiac and Paw Paw in a Wolverine Conference quad meet.

Dowagiac opened with Three Rivers and were clawed by the Wildcats 57-24.

The Chieftains gained victories by pins by underclassmen Tyler Wessendorf (119) and Carl Grant (189) along with senior Ben Luth at 135 pounds in the third, second and first periods respectively.

“We are progressing fairly well and pretty much as expected, but it has been difficult between the youth, holidays, illness and weather,” noted Dowagiac coach Matt Alward. “We will be good in a couple of years as all the kids need is mat time during the off season as junior Ryan Smit and Ben Luth are the only ones not freshmen or sophomores.”

Vicksburg closed the evening with a 51-26 victory over Dowagiac as Luth and Ken Cremeans (215) put opponents’ shoulders to the mat.

“I used a pickle stack, which is one of my three or four holds I like to use against the Vicksburg wrestler,” stated Luth, who is 28-3 on the year and has 131 career wins. “I hope to finish in the top five at State this year and set a good example to everyone else on the team with hard work.”
