Brandywine’s post presence proved to be too much for visiting New Buffalo on Tuesday night as the Bobcats cruised to an easy 55-25 non-conference victory.

“The three-headed monster” of seniors Lauren Leonard and Kelsey Prestly, along with junior Madison Pellow, combined for 32 of Brandywine’s 55 points as New Buffalo had no answer for the Bobcats’ inside game.

From the very beginning of the game you could see the determination the ’Cats had to get the ball to the post.

Brandywine took the opening tip straight to the basket for an easy lay-up by Carlie Newman to go up 2-0. After a turnover by New Buffalo, Leonard got her first basket of the night to give the home team the 4-0 lead. Two consecutive baskets by New Buffalo’s Breanna Workman knotted the game at 4-4 apiece, and then Brandywine took over.

A combination of pressure defense, rebounds, steals and a lot of points in the paint saw the game go from a 4-4 tie to an 18-4 Brandywine advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The home team would put five players in the scorebook in the first quarter led by Newman and Pellow with five points each, while Leonard and Morgan Smallwood each contributed three and MacKenzie Shelton had two.

Workman had all of the Bison points in the first period.

The second quarter picked up where the first left off.

Two more baskets by Pellow and a free throw by Smallwood increased the Bobcat lead to 23-4 before the visitors would score again to make it 23-6 ending the 19-0 run.

The Bobcats would then start a 13-0 run led by Pellow and Leonard with four each as they would increase their lead to 36-6.

A basket by Jade Madison would make the score 36-8, but a 3-point basket by Rachael Ort would give Brandywine a dominating 39-8 halftime advantage.

” I thought our ‘bigs’ did a phenomenal job tonight and our guards did a good job of getting the ball to Madison Pellow,” Brandywine coach Josh Hood said. “That’s what is great about this team. All three of our ‘bigs’ can get you and tonight Madison had a great game. She got great position inside and she had a phenomenal night, and she can finish as good as anybody”.

The second half Brandywine took their foot off the gas a little bit as they got away from their attacking offense and pressure defense and settled back into a conventional half court offense and a zone defense.

Leonard would score six of Brandywine’s nine points in the quarter, as the Bobcats increased their lead to 48-11.

New Buffalo would outscore Brandywine 14-7 over the final eight minutes, but it was too little too late.

Prestly led the Bobcats in the final period with five of the seven points and Morgan Antus would score the other two.

But it was Pellow who led all scorers with 14 points, while Leonard would finish with 13.

Workman would lead New Buffalo with eight points, followed by Amy Golebiewski with five and Abbey Dixon and Lena Madison with four each.

The Bobcats improve to 10-1 on the season, while New Buffalo falls to 4-5.

The Bobcats are next in action on Friday night as they travel to Coloma.
