MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Niles went 2-3 at the Northern Indiana Conference Super Duals on Saturday, but did come away with one individual champion.
Colin Burandt went 5-0 on the day for the Vikings to win the 130-pound weight class for Pool A.
Mishawaka captured Pool A with a 5-0 mark, while South Bend Riley was second at 4-1 and Elkhart Central third at 3-2. Niles finished fourth, South Bend Washington fifth (1-4) and Mishawaka Marian sixth (0-5).
Niles lost to Elkhart Central 35-34, defeated Marian 67-18, lost to Riley 44-19, lost to Mishawaka 53-21 and defeated Washington 72-4.
“Colin defeated Taylor Whistler from Mishawaka, who is ranked fifth in Indiana and wrestled two other very tough kids from Riley and Elkhart Central,” Niles coach Todd Hesson said.
Robbie Legus, who has been battling through some injuries this season, went 4-0 on the day. Cole Allison, Casey Burandt, Donte Stevens and James Asmus were all 3-2.
“This is a good tournament,” Hesson said. “I like the on-site weigh in because it gets kids ready for the postseason. We saw some tough kids. We have a ways to go yet. We are still trying to learn to wrestle at the next level. Especially with teams like Mishawaka and Riley.”
Niles will host St. Joseph for Senior Night on Wednesday before heading over to Stevensville for the Lakeshore Super Duals.
“We will see No. 1-ranked Hudson (Division 4), No. 2 and No. 3 Richmond and Lake Fenton (Division 3) and No. 8-ranked Mason (Division 2),” Hesson said.
