CASSOPOLIS — A Cassopolis man is going to prison on first degree criminal sexual conduct convictions.

John Bryant, 44, was sentenced to 21 to 40 years in prison with credit for 140 days already served at Cass County Circuit Court Friday.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tiffiny Vohwinkle said the defendant “robbed (the victim) of her childhood” with “more than a decade of physical, emotional and mental abuse.”

The sexual abuse began when the girl was under age 13 and continued for 12 years, according to Judge Michael Dodge.

Dodge said Bryant’s actions “will leave a psychological scar she will deal with the rest of her life.”

Bryant showed remorse during his comments.

“I hope someday she can forgive me,” he said. “I’m sorry for causing my family embarrassment and shame.”

Bryant had several family members in attendance to support him.
